Statistical Machine Translation: A Guide for Linguists and Translators

چکیده
This paper presents an overview of Statistical Machine Translation (SMT), which is currently the dominant approach in Machine Translation (MT) research. In Way and Hearne (2010), we describe how central linguists and translators are to the MT process, so that SMT developers and researchers may better understand how to include these groups in continuing to advance the stateof-the-art. If these constituencies are to make an impact in the field of MT, they need to know how their input is used by SMT systems. Accordingly, our objective in this paper is to present the basic principles underpinning SMT in a way that linguists and translators will find accessible

Rule-Based Machine Translation for the Italian–Sardinian Language Pair
This paper describes the process of creation of the first machine translation system from Italian to Sardinian, a Romance language spoken on the island of Sardinia in theMediterranean. The project was carried out by a team of translators and computational linguists. The article focuses on the technology used (Rule-Based Machine Translation) and on some of the rules created, as well as on the or...
متن کاملTranslation Technology Tools and Professional Translators’ Attitudes toward Them
Today technology is an integral part of professional translation; and it is generally assumed that translators’ attitudes toward translation technology tools influence their interaction with technology (Bundgaard, 2017). Therefore, the present two-phase study seeks to shed some light on what translation technology tools are and how professional translators feel toward them. The research method ...
متن کاملInteractive Assistance to Human Translators using Statistical Machine Translation Methods
We investigate novel types of assistance for human translators, based on statistical machine translation methods. We developed Caitra, a tool that makes suggestions for sentence completion, shows word and phrase translation options, and allows postediting of machine translation output. A user study validates the types of assistance and provides insight into the human translation process.
متن کاملبهبود و توسعه یک سیستم مترجمیار انگلیسی به فارسی
In recent years, significant improvements have been achieved in statistical machine translation (SMT), but still even the best machine translation technology is far from replacing or even competing with human translators. Another way to increase the productivity of the translation process is computer-assisted translation (CAT) system. In a CAT system, the human translator begins to type the tra...
متن کاملThe Use of ENGSPAN at the Pan American Health Organization: A Reviser's Perspective
ENGSPAN, a machine translation program (English-Spanish), has been used by the Translation Services unit of the Pan American Health Organization since 1985. In 1999, a total of 2,106,178 words were translated in that language combination, 86% of which were done with the help of ENGSPAN; the cost per word was 8.75 cents, that is, 31% below the normal rate. These positive results are explained by...
